I liked the idea of Sam and Dean angsting and being out of sync in their thoughs during the whole story until they clashed and actually *talked* (communication! that's what the boys need in cannon too!).

And you are right, there will be never *ever* enough hurt!Sam (or smart!Sam) in the world. In fact the infamous voicemail is one of my obsessions, but it's something that coudln't be fixed completely because Sam will never speak about it and Dean will simply never know. But I tried to get them past it and some other issues making some kind of detour, with Dean finally saying what Sam needed to hear without ever knowing the source of those insecurities.
